Hello Beech Grove!
I hope you all had a Happy 4th! I sat atop the hospital parking lot along with family and friends to watch with delight another great display of fireworks! Thank you so much to everyone involved for such a great show. Afterward though I had to sit in traffic for an hour to get home!!! Oh well, it is the one time each year that there is a traffic jam within the city limit! Also, a huge thank you to the BGPD & FD for protecting us. I love this town.... I cannot wait for the fall festival now!
I have had several comments about getting this blog "going". I am appealing to everyone for their help! I need input from you! This is your city too, ugly warts and all. We need to band together and make it better. I am not exactly sure what all I can say each time. I am not into all the political hoopla, but if there is something that needs to be said, by all means, say it! As I have said previously, as long as it does not become a place for vulgarities and the like, we can discuss whatever anyone wants.
I will say this -
I hope that since this is a more like able forum than others, the three who are running for the office of Mayor will take a chance and publish their thoughts about our city as "Citizens", not as "Mayoral Candidates". We need to hear from you. We need to know that you are in this with the rest of us. Even though you are running for an office, you are still citizens just we are! I would hope that you all welcome a forum that you can speak on without the fear of ridicule, as I can assure I will never let that happen on my watch!
Another subject I would like to address is the rentalproperties and the trashed yards issue we have going on. This is a tragedy that needs to be corrected. I would love to somehow get this taken care of. Any ideas on how to form a committee to oversee this? I saw a post on the other blog that really had merit in my opinion. They said to form a "Rental Association" and have a set fee that would go toward upkeep on unkempt yards etc. I know that the city has worked hard to maintain the streets etc, and in my opinion of done a pretty good job. It needs to go a step farther though. I don't have a problem on my street, however there are a few houses around the corner that are not taken care of or mowed regularly. Not only is this an eyesore, it promotes rats and mice and who knows what else! Yuk!!!!!
Just a thought.....Let me know what you think.
Have a great week!

Not only does it promote rats and mice, it deters families that want to buy and settle here. That said, the other side blog is getting nasty, they should all get off their horses and look at the facts and future plans of the candidates. Looks to me they trying to ridicule the other persons person. Why? The actions that are being displayed, are doing nothing to help bring the Grovers back together, just makig the devide bigger.
I am also a life long Grover, 50's, done OK in my life, except for a few bumps in the road during the 70's, and I can say this, that all 3 guys running for mayor are capable, it is up to the voters to decide who thet want, or whomever has the best outlook for the city.
Who cares about their personal life or when they were a teenager or other personality traits they may have, they are all upstanding citizens and care about Beech Grove.
Ummmm, can we consider the possibility that not all renters have crummy yards? Some of know how, and do keep the grass cut, and the trash picked up.
The biggest problems in my immediate area were two homes abandoned by the owners as they faced foreclosure.
Just something to think about.

I did not say that all renters have trashed yards, nor did I say that all homeowners kept their yards up - what I am saying is this - THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY RENTAL PROPERTIES IN THIS CITY! AND, IT IS MAKING MY TAXES SKYROCKET, MY HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE GO UP AND MY PROPERTY HAS LOST VALUE BECAUSE OF IT!!! Believe me, I used to rent. I had pride and took care of my place even though it wasn't mine. But, we are facing a major issue in this city, and a lot of it has to do with some of the people that have moved here from the inner city to try and get away from that bad. To them, BG seems like paradise. I know alot about this because I have taken the time to do research. Do you know that you can own property, become Section 8 qualified and rent said property. You have to accept anybody too, you cannot discriminate against them. Sorry, but to me, that spells trouble. My particular soapbox, and my opinion that you don't have to agree with. Again though I wanted to clarify that I did NOT say that all renters have CRAPPY yards. You should really think about retracting your post, as it is not truly reflective of what was stated in my post.

ANON - you really should read before you write man. Groovy Grover is trying to make positive not negative. I agree with the previous posts. We want proud CITIZENS in this city that cares about it. Tradition shows and statistics prove that homeowners are more likely to keep up their property than renters....
Ooo ... does not properly weed-eating promote chipmonks and other critters? Maybe this should be my new line of defense when fussing with my husband about our serious need for a weed-eater! Woo hoo!! I love to add a detail to a stale arguement!!
To correct the problem of poor property maintenance simply do the foolowing
1. Identify the property
2. Identify the property owner(public record)
3. Take pictures of offensive property.
4. Contact property owner letter stating concerns, simple solutions, time line to be corrected and copies of pictures.
5. Send copies of letters and pictures to news outlets with a "Letter to the Editor" if problems have not been corrected in a timely manner.
Also, recording an organization, there are several rental organizations that owners may choose to participate in, however VERY few do. One meets monthly with the BGPD and the Marion COunty PRosecutors' office to ensure the selection of good tenants and proper up keep of property. Currently there are only 6 regular attenders to this meeting while all have been invited. You can lead a horse to water but you can not make him drink.
