Beech Grove Citizen's Police Academy

I talked to one of the BG Citizens who attended the first police academy today. I was very excited to hear what was learned etc. and more than a little surprised to find that they were actually allowed to participate at the level they did. Most police departments are viewed as vigilantly and secretive. Not so our PD. They want their Citizens informed. The more we know the more we can help fight crime, and stay the small quaint town everyone wants BG to be. From all that I was told, I have a renewed respect for our Police Department. It sounds to me like a few of the guys are taking a page right from the Book of Shroyer! If you grew up in BG, you remember Lowell Shroyer - we hated him as kids and respect him now that we are adults! Funny how that happens!! If you get the chance, find someone who attended and have a chat with them about this program. I also encourage them to post it right here! I hope if they decide to have another one I can be on the team. If so, I will Journal each week.

There were a few comments posted on the other BG blog regarding the police officers and I will say this - Don't bite the hand that protects you...you never know when you may be under attack, especially if this city doesn't turn itself around. There is so much strife between people right now that we may have our own little city war before it is all said and done. How sad is that! And that being said - I hope Smitty's bakery business does pick up if it is down. How horrible would that be for the kids of BG not to be able to ride their bikes to get doughnuts on the weekends. (They still do that don't they?!!)

I have known our current Police Chief for several years as I have 2 kids that attended BG schools. Rich Witmer has been involved with the kids in our community for as long as I can recall, and now he is leading our police officers. All I can say to that is Bravo! I hope he stays in that position for a long time. If you want to be involved Beech Grove, go see Rich Witmer. I am sure they could use volunteers for something. Keep up the good work, protect our city and it's citizens, BGPD! I think you all deserve a big fat raise and I challenge the Mayor to make that happen, in fact I double dog dare him!!!

Yeah, the BGPD should be left out of all of the political bull!
They all risk getting shot everytime they are on duty!

I too admire our police department, fire department and yes, the sanitation department. We recently needed the fire department, and they were there, taking care of things. They were compassionate and wonderful in a time of high stress for us. The police department also deserves kudos, having tracked down something that was taken prior to the fire. Not an easy task, but they did it! The sanitation department even picked up some of the debris I had intended to dispose of otherwise -
Thanks so much to everyone!

I hope all of your neighbors were there with a helping hand as well. I would have been and so would a lot of others I know in this town. I hope all is well for you and your family now and I hope that all the fella's at the BGFD & BGPD along with the Sanatation Department see these posts and know that we do appreciate them!

I too feel the city is very fortunate to have the type of services that are available to the citizens. I know there is always room for improvement in any organization, but we are blessed. Unfortunately, I think that some people are unhappy in life and they attempt to always look on the negative side of everything and make everyone as unhappy. Even though I have not lived here my entire life, I have lived here long enough that my kids got a good education from Beech Grove Schools and the city services (police, fire, and street deparmtment) have always gone the extra mile.
